ELLESMERE Port angler Nigel Smith put in a good performance to win Sunday’s open match at Hampton Springs.
The Sensas Rod ‘n’ Reel member was drawn on peg 49 on Long Island and fished a mixture of baits at 10m and in the margins for his final weight of 62lbs 8oz of carp and tench. Chester’s Gary White ran in second, bagging 55lbs 12oz of carp, tench and silvers taken from peg 47 on Long Island using corn and pellet at 8m and in the margins.
Chris Barron weighed in with 52lbs 12oz of carp from peg eight on Long Island, again taken on corn and pellet, for third place.
Ellesmere Port British Legion AC took to the banks of the Weaver at Winsford for their club match on Sunday.
Steve Andrews took around 120 roach and skimmer bream on the pole at 10m for a winning weight of 9lbs 12oz.
Fishing on the adjacent peg, Elles- mere Port angler Steve Bithall netted 5lbs 8oz of skimmers on the feeder for second spot. Some way behind in third was Andrew Fletcher, also from Ellesmere Port. He weighed in with 3lbs 8oz of skimmers also taken on the feeder.
Two open matches took place at Lingmere Fishery, Moreton, last week.
A mixture of carp, barbel and bream weighing 51lbs 12oz was more than enough for Paul Johnson to win Thursday’s match. He fished pellet on peg 21 and was unable to be caught.
His nearest rival was Dave Randles senior, drawn on peg 17. Randles netted a mixed bag of 39lbs 13oz, again using pellet. Third place was taken by Bob Evans on peg five. Evans weighed in with 32lbs 10oz of carp, bream and barbel using the same method.
In the Saturday open match, Chris Smith was top rod with a bag of 51lbs. Drawn on peg 17, he took carp and barbel on pellet for the win.
Dave Woodworth ran in second with a weight of 47lbs 14oz of carp, bream and barbel from peg five and Alan Dewhurst was the third best placed angler on the day with a 29lbs 8oz mixed bag from peg nine.
Rivacre AC staged a club match on the banks of the Horseshoe Lake, Spring Lea, Shrewsbury on Sun- day.
All three of the top rods were Elles- mere Port anglers. Jeff Grantham, drawn on peg four, took 35lbs 4oz of carp up to 5lbs on pole and pellet for the win. A 27lbs 8oz haul of similar fish gave Alex Riach second place on peg eight. Jason Connah weighed in third with 20lbs 12oz.
