JOHN Owen was the week’s top rod as Cheshire Fishing, Tattenhall, reported some excellent individual catches.

Owen, of Chester, took a mixed bag of roach, skimmers and carp weighing up to 12lb to tip the scales at 72lb. He used a variety of baits including paste, pellet and corn.

Wrexham’s Stephen Moore landed the heaviest specimen of the week – two mirror carp of 17lb 2oz and 16lb, along with a 13lb 8oz and 12lb 6oz common carp. Hot and spicy meat seemed to be the bait for the bigger fish.

Feeding soft hook pellet over feeder pellet, Brian Cliffe from Great Sutton recorded a superb 85lb bag of carp up to 8lb and roach of up to 1lb 6oz.

Thursday Rovers AC held their open match at Hampton Springs on Rock Pool. Drawn on peg eight, Charlie Mayers fished pellet shallow to win with a bag of 91lb. Kevin Williams used similar tactics to eventually weigh in with 72lb for second spot. Saltney’s Gary Vincent took 57lb for third spot.

Pellet waggler was the bait that gave Alan Murray the win on the lake of tranquility at Leeswood in the Thursday open match. Alan netted 51lb of fish to beat Chester’s Phil Barwell into second place with 44lb 4oz. Frank Doran of Chester just missed out with 44lb for third.

The Sunday open match at Hampton Springs was held on Long Island and Meadow Pools. John Cheetham ran out a clear winner with an impressive 91lb 2oz. Drawn on peg 10 on Long Island, John took 6llb of carp and 30lb of tench fishing corn and pellet in the margins. The next nearest competitor was Martin Wedley. He fished pellet shallow in the margins of peg 13 on Meadows Pool for 44lb 2oz of carp and barbel. Third place on the day went to Charlie Mayers. From peg 18 of Long Island, Charlie weighed in with 40lb 2oz of silvers and carp, using meat and pellet at 10m and corn and pellet in the margins.

Tarvin Sands staged Dorset AC’s club match on Saturday. The winner was Martin Davenport with 43lb6oz of carp taken on meat and feeder. John Mainwaring weighed in for second with a close 42lb 1oz of carp, followed by Mick Winwood with 27lb 8oz. The new 50-peg match lake should be up and running by the end of July.

Ellesmere Port Royal British Legion took to the banks of the national length of the River Weaver at Winsford for their recent club match. Poor weather produced low weights, giving Steve Andrews the win with 65 fish for a total weight of 3lb 1oz. Brian Wandsworth took an amazing 2lb 8oz eel to run in second with 3lb for second spot. Andy Hickman wasn’t far behind taking 2lb 12oz of skimmers for third.

Season tickets are now available to any Chester resident who wishes to fish the city waters of the River Dee. The cost of an annual permit is £20 and is available from Chester City Council.
