ELLESMERE Port’s Mark Greasley was one of the leading anglers in Thursday’s Cheshire Police AC club match.

Drawn on peg 184 of the Red Lion section of the River Weaver, he took a large amount of small roach using red maggot. His final weight was 9lbs 4oz – good enough for second place on the day.

The eventual winner was Warrington angler Steve Derbyshire with 9lbs 15oz.

Ellesmere Port AC also held their match on the same stretch of the Weaver on Sunday. Once again, pegs close to the bridge produced the winning weights. Joe Greaves was lucky enough to draw peg 189, capitalising on this for the win. He netted 10lbs 1oz of roach and skimmers on the pole. Jimmy Crimes wasn’t too far behind with 9lbs 10oz of roach and perch in second.

The second match of the North Wales Winter League took place on Sunday at Hampton Springs Fishery. Sixty anglers took part and competed on all of the fishery’s pools. Dave Weale, of Sensas Rod ‘n’ Reel, took top spot to put the Ellesmere Port team into third place in the table overall. He weighed in with a good 71lbs 4oz of carp taken to pellet from peg 24 of Long Island. Andy Amos supported the Rod ‘n’ Reel team with 66lbs 12oz of carp from Long Island peg 18.

After two matches, Saints and Chester Tackle Locker share first place in the table.

The second match of the Wirral Winter League took place on Sunday on the banks of the Shropshire Union Canal at Croughton. Barry Davies took 3lbs 8oz of roach and skimmers using bread and caster to put Willaston Reds into top spot in the table. Barry was the fourth-placed individual overall, but was unlucky not to win after losing a substantial carp.

Chris Smith netted an impressive amount of fish to win the Saturday Open match at Lingmere on Saturday. He used pellet at 16m to the island from peg 20 for 100lbs 8oz of carp.
