ANGLING: ANGLERS have begun to look elsewhere for competitive fishing now the River Weaver season is over, writes JOHN STUBBS.
Winsford Veterans turned to Border Fisheries for the first of a 14-match series - six there, six on the Trent & Mersey Canal, and two at venues to be decided, all on Tuesday 9am draws.
Doug Maddock is running a £1 pool for the best eight and the first match pulled in 29 anglers. The venue encourages the social side of the sport, too.
Trevor Lovatt was the winner with 28lb of carp from peg 33. I was second with 15-8-0 of carp, rudd, gudgeon and a small chub. Alex Clarke 13-4-0, Peter Wakefield 13-0-0, Ray Hamlett 12-0-0, Brian Hawkins 11-12-0 were next and, in all, some 238lb of fish were caught.
Meadow Bank took their match to the Shropshire Union and Alec Walton had an easy win with a 3-11-0 catch, from Ian Morrison 1-13-0 and Larry Bates 1-1-0.
Barnton and Frodsham Angling Club celebrated several new records over the season.
Pauline and Dave Bernardo set a new best for the Ladies and Gents Pairs Cup on the River Weaver at Anderton with a combined net of 3-9-0.
The pair of Danny Griffith and Phil Hawkins put together a weight of 5-1-8 for a new venue record for a Green Cup junior/senior pairs match at Heesom's Pool.
John Dudley took the cup for the heaviest fish caught in a senior match during the season, landing a bream of 4-10-0 from Heesom's Pool, while Daniel Moore set a new record for the largest fish taken in a junior match with the capture of a superb 14-7-0 mirror carp from the Junior Cistern.
A new match record went to Lyn Morrison in the Ladies' Summer Series, with her catch of 5-12-8 taken on the Top Cistern.
In total, more than 1,200 competitors fished in senior matches throughout the season and the 886 who troubled the scales brought in 2542-15-2, an average of 2-14-0 per angler.
Peter Moore is the new senior club champion, having performed consistently throughout the season to amass a total points tally of 851 to edge ahead of Chris Parry, last season's club champion, who had 824 points.
The club holds its annual presentation evening on May 21 at Barnton Cricket Club with tickets, priced £3 seniors and £1.50 juniors, available by telephoning Peter Leicester on 01606 75931 or John Morrison on 01606 79391.
