WIDNES Rec stood firm to defeat fellow Widnes & District Division Two outfit St Michael's in the third week of Karalius Bros RTB Section action.

The eventual winners had begun confidently with opening wins from Russ Hardman and Andy McIntosh.

Mark Lunt replied but pairs colleagues Andy McIntosh & Anthony Freeman restored the two-game cushion.

Andrew Davies & Ian Johnson pulled one back but Rec were undaunted.

Their final pair - A McColm & George Plumpton - also won but the match was soon back in the balance.

Victories for singles stars Ian Johnson and Barry Shanahan saw St Mike's equal-ise and send the contest to a decider.

Rec kept their nerve and secured the win thanks to anchor man Paul Van der Merve.

Halton Stadium comfortably accounted for brave underdogs Our Lady's.

Stadium's Alan Moran, Alan Clark and John Bowles take the first three.

Our Lady's fought back with successive pairs wins from Steven Cosgrove & Dave Lynch and C Taylor & Chris McLean, only for John Greenwood & James Brown to consolidate Stadium's position.

Barry Stanners promptly polished off the job, though Our Lady's posted a second win through Frank Cosgrove.

But Kurt Mathews took the final game to compound the agony for Our Lady's.

Mighty Mill Brow eventually saw off a stubborn Corpy after opening victories from Carl Hackney (17 darts) and Mark Harrison.

Corpy responded well through Stuart Lawton while Ste Kelly & Alan Pennington levelled.

Victory for Brow's Paul Linger & Ste Miller was cancelled out by Corpy duo Lol McGeiver & Kev O'Connor and all therefore rested on the last three singles.

Brow steamrollered to their first RTB league victory with wins from Greg Lawrenson, Chris Bright and Mike Howard.

Bowling Club edged out Widnes Rec A with three opening wins for Rob Gatcliffe, Jason Haddock and J Batty putting the writing on the wall for Rec A.

They recovered with a win by opening pair, Dave Jackson & Ian Thompson, but this was soon countered, in 14 darts, by J Batty & Alan Magee.

Paul Welsh & Andy Ruane kept Rec A in with a chance but Alan Magee hit the matchwinner for Bowler.

Rec A's Paul Welsh scored a consolation success but the Bowler savoured the moment as Peter Bowles gave them the final game.

Division One Buffs pulled rank on Castle from Division Two. Buffs began with singles wins from Brian Dutton and D Batty, before Castle struck back with a win from Peter Fairhurst.

Buffs galloped on with pairs triumphs from JJ Geoghegan & Tez Gallagher and Darren Grant & Joe Pennington.

Castle weren't retreating from the fight and N Bowden & Tommy Robertson kept them in the hunt.

But Buffs took the last three through Tez Gallagher, Darren Grant (10 darts) and Ray Dutton.

Division One Cricketers were stunned by USC.

The first four games were neck and neck. Neil Clare and Dave Everitt collected wins from the first and third games for the Services, only for Cricketers' Ray Hatton and first pair E Waterworth & Dave Keegan to respond in games two and four.

Services were on a roll - taking the two remaining doubles contests thanks to Keith Mason & Alan Gill and Kevin Martindale & Mal Holden.

This gave Kevin Birch the chance to wrap up the two points which he did.

Cricketers, now playing for pride only, took the last two through Dave Gerrard and Dave Leather.
