ATHLETICS: A SALTNEY gymnast is battling to pull on the red vest of Wales in next year's Commonwealth Games.

Melanie Roberts is one of 10 competitors fighting for the five available spots in the national squad for the flight to Melbourne.

Competing against nine other nations from across the continent, Wales came back across the water with 13 medals to their name.

Leading the way was Roberts, who made sure Wales claimed first-placed finishes on each apparatus when she won gold in the beam.

The 17-year-old is one of the favourites to win a place on the plane to Australia as she has experience of the Commonwealths, having competed in Manchester in

If Roberts is successful, she will be on familiar territory come next March - as she travels to Melbourne next month for the World Championships.
