TENNIS: The head teacher of Overleigh St Mary's School, Hand-bridge, is supporting a bid to open an indoor academy on the site.

Mrs Elaine Devine confirmed that she and the governors were 'excited and enthusiastic' about the proposals, reported in last week's Chronicle.

Coach Keith Roberts already holds coaching courses at the school and has linked up with Spanish coach Roberto Rubio in a bid to open an academy.

'This partnership has brought considerable benefits to children and the local community over many years,' she said. 'Our school has daily access to excellent floodlit tennis courts as a direct result of this partnership, and together with the skills of our own PE specialist, it means that we can incorporate tennis most effectively into our PE curriculum.'

The governors are also keen to look at whether there is scope in this project to help the school meet its long-held ambition, to reinstate swimming provision on our site.

Governors and parents of St Mary's will be working with those associated with the academy development, to explore the possibility of a joint venture to develop a new learner pool as part of the building proposals.
