HOWIE Mainwaring had a weekend to remember at Oulton Park.

The Frodsham rider constantly lowered his best times during racing and came away with a brace of second placings in the Privateers Cup, which is incorporated into the British Superbike Championship.

In only the third outing on his Mark Johns-backed machine, with which he is now getting more familiar, the 20-year-old continued his recent improvements.

He said: 'I gave it my all out there today. I am getting more used to the bike and how it handles coming out of the corners. I can give it more throttle now and the bike is under control whereas before I had to be more gentle when giving the machine more power as it came in with a bang.'

Howie, son of former superbike rider Steve Mainwaring, knocked a second off his best time and is out again at Croft next month.

He added: 'I have a wild card ride in the World Superbikes Series when they return to the UK in the 1000cc.'

Mainwaring also gained a ninth place during the National Super-stock Championship race aboard the Krystal Racing/Space Air backed Yamaha, after a hard-fought battle with John McGuinness.

In the 125cc British GP Championship, Ellesmere Port's Jenny Tinmouth surpassed her best finish of the season in front of her 'home' crowd.

Tinmouth produced a solid display to claim 13th place on the qualifying grid before a good start in the race itself gave her the impetus to go on and secure seventh overall.

The performance eclipses the 28-year-old's previous best, a ninth-place finish achieved at Knockhill earlier this month.

'I'm really happy with how the race went and it was particularly pleasing to finish seventh in front of my home crowd,' said Tinmouth, who has now tallied 24 points for the season.

'My radiator was leaking just before I went out so I had to borrow one but apart from that it went well.'

Tinmouth's success continues to defy the odds in a male-dominated sport and, despite riding a non-factory Honda, she believes she has a realistic chance of securing a top-five placing in one of the four remaining races of the series.

She said: 'I rode a good race at Oulton Park and I'm getting closer and closer to that top five. Hopefully I will be able to do that in one of the remaining races and I'm looking for another improved performance at Croft in two weeks' time.'
