BROOK Cooke-Goodwin has described his double success at the World United Martial Arts Federation World Championships as a ‘dream’.

Blacon teenager Brook squared off with fighters from across the globe in Geneva and came back with two golds and a silver from three competitions.

Brook, who goes to Blacon High School, took up martial arts aged 10 but the 14-year-old had a 12-month break before returning with a bang.

He said: “I can’t believe what I have achieved.

“I started this as a hobby and to end up two-time world champion is like a dream.”

Blacon High School sponsored his trip to Switzerland and Brook now hopes his success will inspire others.

He said: “I hope that younger pupils can look at what I have achieved and realise that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

“In school we are pushed to try and do our best in everything that we do, both academically and when taking part in sports activities.”

In addition to sponsorship from his school, Brook received support from the Blacon community and his dad David Cooke said the family were extremely grateful.

He said: “We wouldn’t have been there without the support of Blacon High School and people in Blacon.

“The school have been brilliant and Brook’s confidence has really come on from this.”

Brook is also a talented footballer and helped the school reach the English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) PlayStation Small Schools Cup final last season.

Assistant headteacher Dave Sabri praised him for both his sporting and academic achievement.

Mr Sabri said: “He’s doing very well in school and he balances things well.

“We went to celebrate success in school and we couldn’t be more proud of Brook.

“You only dream of having a world champion and now we have one in our school.”

Headteacher Sue Yates added: “We are so proud of Brook. He has achieved at the highest level and it is remarkable that someone so young could be a double world champion.

“We talk at this school about leaving a legacy behind you and Brook has certainly done this. His commitment and hard work will be an example for others to follow.”
