CHESTER Schoolboys produced an heroic performance to book their place in the final of the Cheshire Under 14s Alcock Cup.
Lee Cairns’ side caused a big shock as they beat all-conquering Warrington on their own patch to seal their place in the final on May 16.
Warrington, as defending English Schools FA Inter-Counties champions, were expected to brush their visitors aside. But brilliant Chester had other ideas and after a thrilling encounter ended 2-2 after extra-time, they held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties.
Manager Cairns said: “I was so proud of all the squad for their effort, determination and togetherness.
“They fully deserved their place in final.”
Having a near full-strength squad to choose from, Chester twice took the lead with a pair of penalties from captain and man-of-the-match Aaron Hassall. But the hosts hit back on both occasions to force the shoot-out.
Hassall, Daniel Reynolds, Billy Reeves and Sam Jones converted their efforts, but sudden death was required and after Matt Sheen kept his cool, Oliver Tyler made a flying save to send Chester through to the final.
Chester: Oliver Tyler, Jack Powell, Brandon Garland, Billy Reeves, Ollie Knight, Daniel Reynolds. Tom Donald, Aaron Hassall, Matthew Sheen, Cameron Black, Sam Jones, Matthew Simpson, Jordan Coxall, Charlie Nicolson, Jack Allen, Leon Langmead, Jack Minshull.
