More than 300 primary school children from across Cheshire West and Chester came together yesterday (Thursday, April 24) for the Deeside Ramblers annual primary schools hockey festival.

A total of 32 teams from 20 schools took part in the competition, played in glorious sunshine at the Ramblers Tiverton home, last Thursday.

The competition was split into two sessions, with the smaller primary schools competing in the morning session and the larger schools playing in the afternoon.

In the morning session, Acton Primary, near Northwich, beat Farndon Primary on strokes in the final to claim cup glory.

Acton defeated Manley in the semi-final to book their final spot, while Farndon claimed a 1-0 triumph over Utkinton.

The afternoon session saw The King’s School, Chester, seal victory in the shield after they narrowly defeated Kelsall in the final on penalties.

The victorious King’s team had booked their spot in the final with a strokes victory over Mickle Trafford, while the defeated finalists Kelsall were victorious over Delamere in the other semi-final.

Deeside Ramblers stalwart John Heath said: “It was another fantastic occasion and everything went really well and the competition was enjoyed by all those who took part.

“It is a source of immense pride for us as a club to see over 300 hundred school children come down here and enjoy playing the sport so much. It is great for the sport locally and long may that continue.”
