THE annual Newton Athletic tournament drew 4,000 people to the Cheshire County Sports Club over the weekend.

The two-day competition featured 200 teams from all over the North West and North Wales.

Almost 600 matches were played in what proved to be a fantastic celebration of youth football.

Tournament coordinator Ryan McAlister said: “As a club, it has been a big year for us, having been awarded Community Club status. It was only fitting we delivered a bigger and better tournament than ever before. The feedback has been amazing and has made all the hard work and effort by coaches and volunteers associated with the club worthwhile.

“We are already planning next year’s event.”

Some of the winners included Greenleas Celtic of Wallasey (under 6s outstanding team); Hawker Jets (U9 Cup), Mossley Hil (U10s).

Saturday also saw Newton Athletic U8s defeat Netherton (Liverpool) 2-1 after an extra time golden goal.

On Sunday, AFC Hoylake won the U11s title, West Kirkby Wasps defeated Upton to win the U12s crown, Ridgewood Rangers (Wirral) saw off Penyffordd to take the U13s award and Ellesmere Port defeated West Kirkby Wasps on penalties in the U14s section.
