A TEAM from Chester has emerged as a dominant force in primary school girls football.

Waverton Primary’s under 11s – already Cheshire champions and winners of the Chester league and cup – triumphed in a major English Schools FA (ESFA) competition.

Their success came at the ESFA Danone Nations Cup Finals, which took place at the Hive Football Centre in Barnet.

Waverton qualified as one of the eight best teams in the country. After coming through the group stages, they defeated Westbury Academy from Bristol on penalties before facing Elloughton Primary School from East Riding in the final.

A rousing second-half fightback saw the Chester team recover from 1-0 down to post a 3-1 win.

Waverton have now secured their place to compete in the Danone Nations Cup England Final on June 9 at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent.

The winning team from there will then be selected to represent England at the Danone Nations Cup World Final, which will be held at Wembley in September.
