One of the most recognisable and popular faces in Chester sport will be laid to rest next week.

The funeral of lifelong Chester Football Club fan and devoted Cheshire Phoenix Basketball Club supporter and volunteer Mickey Clifford will be held at Christ Church, Newtown, Chester on Tuesday, December 2.

Born and bred Cestrian Mickey, who lived in Hoole, lost his long battle with cancer last week, aged 71, with hundreds of tributes paid to the much-loved character via social media and a minutes applause held in his honour by the 2,936-strong crowd before Chester FC's match with Bristol Rovers on Saturday, November 22.

Hundreds of mourners, including the Cheshire Phoenix team and staff, are expected to celebrate the life of Mickey, with the service starting at 1pm at Christ Church, Gloucester Street, before burial at Blacon Cemetery at 2.30pm.

The family have requested family flowers only and any donations to be made to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, Backford.

Parking is limited at Christ Church but additional parking can be found at the Black Diamond Street car park. Any enquiries should be forwarded to Stephen Johnstone & Son Funeral Directors on 01244 292835.
