Two sport students who attend West Cheshire College’s football academy in Ellesmere Port have kicked off the new year by being selected.

Eddie Speed, 17 and Callum Glover, 18 are celebrating after being picked for the Welsh National Squad and for Welsh Academy League side Cefn Druids, who play near Wrexham, respectively.

Eddie, currently with Airbus Under 19s, was delighted when the national call up winged its way to him whilst Callum recently made his first team debut for Cefn Druids.

Both students are members of the college’s dedicated Football Academy in the town which allows them to visit local professional and semi-professional football clubs.

They can also take part in coaching displays and educational visits whilst working towards their BTEC qualification in Sport.

Eddie, who is studying a BTEC Level 3 extended diploma, said: “I’m delighted to have been selected for the national squad. The college course has definitely helped me to get selected.

“The tutors have been an incredible support and having the chance to constantly play football during my course has really helped me to grow as a footballer.

“In the future I would like to get a football scholarship in America and I would love to play football around the world.”

Jason Doggett, sports tutor at the college, said: “The college is so proud of Callum and Eddie’s success. We have a high level of talent at the college and we work with our students to improve their skills and help them get the ability and confidence to progress with their sport.”

The college is currently signing up the academy’s September 2015 intake. Youngsters interested in joining can email Jason at j.doggett@west-cheshire.ac.uk.
