Chester FC have confirmed Walsall goalkeeper Liam Roberts will spend the 2016/17 season on loan at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium.

The deal was agreed between the two clubs last month but could not be finalised until the 21-year-old had signed a new contract with the League One side.

That has now happened with the promising custodian linked up with the Blues squad before training on Monday as he begins his challenge with Jon Worsnop for the number one spot.

Roberts becomes Jon McCarthy's fourth new addition of the summer following the permanent captures of Blaine Hudson, Elliott Durrell and Ross Killock.

Hailing from Walsall, Roberts came through his hometown club's successful academy before signing professional terms in 2013.

He has spent time on loan at Romulus, Rushall Olympic, Rainworth Miners Welfare, Southport, Gresley, twice, and Rugby Town.

Roberts made his senior debut for Walsall against Millwall in February with first-choice Neil Etheridge and replacement Craig MacGillivray ruled out.

Although the Saddlers lost 3-0, then head coach Sean O'Driscoll praised Roberts for his performance.

His goalkeeping coach at the Banks's Stadium is former Chester City stopper Neil Cutler and Roberts impressed Ian Sharps when the Chester assistant had a spell shadowing former Walsall manager Dean Smith.
