Grenville Millington says a possible play-off tilt should hold no fear and the chairman wants fans to jump on the bandwagon.

Tempering expectations for a moment, the 63-year-old club legend raises the fact the Blues are still three points short of the 52-point mark needed to ensure survival last term.

Yet with 12 games to go, including five against teams above them, Steve Burr and his team, now 10th, look an increasingly decent outside bet.

Eastleigh head to the Swansway Chester Stadium on Saturday (3pm) and another three points would see the Blues climb at least two more places so Millington, appointed chairman in October, has urged supporters to fire up the atmosphere for the end of season run-in.

“I’ve got one eye over my shoulder because we are three points away from that safety mark so we don’t want to get carried away but at the same time we’ve got to back the team to the hilt,” said Millington, who made more than 300 appearances for the club and took over as chairman towards the end of 2014.

“I’ve heard a bit of talk about us not being ready for the play-offs but I am not worried because if we get there, we will be ready. In football terms, it’s called getting your finger out.

“I know from when I was playing what a difference that support can make. The people behind the goal, the lad with the drum are crucial.

“If they start chanting and singing then it gets everyone else going. I’m asking the fans what can I do, what can you do and what can we do together to give us the best chance of getting into the play-offs.

“Being successful on the pitch gives us more power to our elbow off the pitch so if get into the play-offs then we’ll have a real go.

“I think the players the manager has brought in have really added something to the team and given real competition for places.

“That’s got the players who were here already playing even better so it’s been like having another two or three signings.

“I’m not worried about the team at all because Steve Burr has got them going well so I’m more concerned with what we can all do to help them.

“I wants us match the team-spirit the manager has got on the pitch, off the pitch.”
