Motors secured a smooth FA Cup passage at a rain-drenched Stoke Lane on Saturday, October 12.

A first-half goal from Andy Nicholas and a brace from Ashley Stott ensured Carl Macauley’s men made it into the hat for the fourth qualifying round draw.

The Motormen played some attractive, fast flowing football against their Evo-Stik League hosts.

The visitors went 1-0 up on 12 minutes. Matty Williams floated in a dangerous free-kick which was headed across goal by Tom Hannigan, and Nicholas was on hand to head home from close range.

Vauxhall should have increased their lead just before half-time when Hannigan headed high over the bar after another free-kick from Williams.

Carlton looked a different side after the interval with Blair Anderson, Josh Thornton and Alexander Troke all going close. It seemed the home side could grab an equaliser but the Motormen all but killed the tie off with two goals in the space of three minutes.

A slip at the back led to Ashley Stott racing through on goal and when he was hauled down by debutant keeper Harry Waldram, the referee had no option but to award a penalty. Stott stepped up and calmly chipped the ball home for 2-0.

On 67 minutes, Motors made it 3-0 when Stott slotted home at the back post. Carlton never gave up and pulled a goal back through Danny Elliott.

Vauxhall: Jones, Fearnehough, Barnes (Wainwright), Hannigan, Nicholas, Noone, Clair (Kosylo), Williams, Stott, Ellams, Rugg (Noon). Subs: Ellison, Rutter. Attendance: 153.

Motors return to Skrill North action on Saturday, October 19 when they welcome AFC Barrow to Rivacre Park (3pm).

Their rearranged match at Stalybridge takes place next Tuesday, October 22 at 7.45pm.
