THE Blues finally got their season up and running at the Deva Stadium this afternoon as they hit hapless Barnet with a five-goal blitz.
Two-goal Ryan Lowe turned in a virtuoso performance to help City put their nightmare start to the campaign behind them.
Boss Simon Davies rang the changes – handing Paul Taylor, Mark Hughes and Stephen Vaughan their first starts of the season – and reverted to his preferred 4-3-3 formation.
There were chances at either end during a frantic opening half-hour, but Kevin Ellison was the first man to put the ball in the back of the net on 32 minutes.
The Chester forward played a neat one-two with Lowe before squeezing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards.
While City had been wasteful in front of goal during the opening 45 minutes, they were more clinical after the restart and Lowe grabbed the killer second on 57 minutes.
He finished coolly from close range after Ellison had robbed Bees skipper Michael Leary and played a neat cross into the box.
Barnet’s heads then dropped and skipper Paul Linwood made it 3-0 five minutes later, blasting home at the far post from Lowe’s free-kick on the right.
Lowe was once again the architect as City netted a fourth, swinging in a corner that Kevin Roberts blasted into the net at the second attempt.
With just 11 minutes to go, Ellison turned provider for Lowe. He flicked on Laurence Wilson’s pas and Lowe ran through to tuck away his second of the afternoon.
Chester were denied a deserved clean sheet in injury time as slack defending allowed sub Cliff Akurang to scuff home a consolation. But this was a much-improved display from the Blues and they left the field to warm applause having chalked up only their second home win of the calendar year.
In contrast, Barnet boss Paul Fairclough led his team to the far side of the ground at the final whistle to apologise to a pocket of angry travelling fans.
