A TWO goal first-leg deficit proved too much for Winsford in a thrilling concluding half of their NWCFL Division Two Cup semi-final, last Tuesd ay.

Competition rules meant the Blues had to call on players signed before February 23 - the original scheduled date - from the earlier part of the season and Craig Robinson, Dave Tasker and Gareth Baker all gave a good account of themselves.

United made a hopeful break through in 16 minutes when Mark Quinn scored following a Lee Duck-worth corner.

Carlos Meakin levelled in 33 minutes, but Blues' lead was restored two minutes later when Duckworth's free kick was headed home by Dave Tasker.

But United were back where they started from when Danny Morton fumbled a Dean Butterworth shot into his own net before half-time.

An own goal just after the break raised United's spirits but New Mills held out and, in the 90th minute, Meakin claimed his second goal to settle the issue.
