CHESTER City last night agreed to release Gavin Ward from his contract, paving the way for the veteran goalkeeper to join Wrexham.

Ward worked as a goalkeeping coach for Chester and also provided cover for number one John Danby, who has been an ever-present in City’s first team this season.

The 37-year-old moved to the Deva Stadium from Tranmere Rovers last summer, but is now expected to seal a switch to City’s struggling cross-border rivals.

Chester manager Bobby Williamson said: “The move to Wrexham will give Gavin first-team football, which unfortunately we couldn’t give him at Chester.

“His coaching contribution has been outstanding, and I would like to thank him for his efforts.”

Blues defender Phil Bolland also looks to be on his way to the Racecourse. He has been told he is free to leave Chester and is currently weighing up an offer from Wrexham boss Brian Little.

Sean Hessey could make his loan move to Macclesfield permanent, while Rob Marsh-Evans may join Leigh RMI.

Since the January transfer window opened last week, Chester have already waved goodbye to Ashley Westwood (Stevenage Borough), Simon Yeo (Bury, on loan) and Dean Bennett (Kidderminster, on loan). The departures have eased City’s salary cap problems, giving Williamson scope to bring in new players.
