WITTON failed to dent the worst defence in the UniBond Premier Division - and their travelling fans voiced their displeasure at the end of Saturday's game.

They let their disapproval ring out around the near-deserted terraces of the town's rugby league ground, where the team formerly known simply as Emley had relocated.

They had witnessed one of Albion's inexplicably turgid performances where passes sideways and backwards were their most successful. Going forward was another thing entirely and it all added up to painfully slow build-ups that allowed Wakefield to get men in position to protect goal-keeper Paul Cuss.

They did this so well it was an hour before Cuss had to make his first save.

In the first half, apart from a Simon Burton effort that curled narrowly wide of the far post in the 10th minute, little else happened around the home goal.

Meanwhile, Paul Gibson was certainly kept busy at the other end as several corners were conceded by the normally sound Witton defence.

It was from one of these in the 17th minute, that was needlessly conceded, that Christian Fox launched the ball at the feet of Marc Thompson 20 yards away to place his low shot out of Gibson's reach.

That Emley didn't score again was down to Gibson who twice, five minutes either side of the interval, produced glorious saves to deny both Adam Muller and Fox.

It was Ryan Baker who brought the first save out of Cuss when his powerful shot was pushed over the bar.

The Albion midfielder was then unfortunate when his next strike, this time low down, cannoned off the heel of a defender who didn't know too much about it.

Mike Moseley, when at last he got away from man-mountain marker Nicky Wood, produced two efforts in quick succession. One was saved with the other hitting the side netting.

Lee Madin's introduction breathed fresh life into the proceedings but try as he could, he wasn't able to produce the telling shot nor clinical pass, while Michael Bird looked to be short of match practice.

Marvin Molyneux, who can count himself rather unfortunate to lose his place, again showed well in his short time on the park. Ironically, the person who could have made all the difference, given the vast acreage of the playing area, Darrell Dicken, was serving the first of his three-match suspension.

WITTON: Gibson; Evans (Molyneux 80), Pritchard, Furnival, Nolan; Yates (Madin 64), Foy, Baker, Barlow; Moseley, Burton (Bird 64).
