CARL Macauley's first official match as Vauxhall boss ended in disappointment after former Motors favourite Terry Fearns returned to haunt his old club on Saturday, writes Paul Hassall.

The Droylsden frontman struck two of his side's four goals to help condemn the Motormen to their second consecutive league defeat and plunge them back into the relegation zone.

The result is a huge blow for Macauley who, having previously won five of his first six league matches as caretaker boss, has now seen his side concede seven goals in their last two outings.

He said: 'I'm very disappointed with the result. We played okay at times but we made three huge mistakes for their goals and if you make those type of errors at this level you are going to be punished.

'We need to get back to basics and stop conceding stupid goals. Hopefully we can put this setback behind us and regain some of the defensive solidarity that was the basis of our good run.

'We need to work hard and put in better performances to give ourselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.'

The visitors made chances at will and Fearns was guilty of some woeful finishing on two occasions before the Bloods finally took a deserved lead on 28 minutes when Chris Denham's weak effort sneaked into the far corner.

Two minutes later Droylsden doubled their advantage when a swift counter attack down the left saw Jamie Tandy cross for Fearns who swept the ball home.

Motors needed an immediate response and on 38 minutes they got one when James Olsen dispatched a glancing header beyond Droylsden's Paul Phillips.

On 67 minutes the visitors restored their two-goal cushion when Stephen McNulty deflected Fearns' goalbound effort on to the crossbar, only for it rebound off the Motors captain into the net.

But the homeside refused to give up and 12 minutes from time Peter Cumiskey gave Vauxhall hope when he rose at the far post to head home Mark Smyth's pinpoint cross from the right.

The homeside pushed forward in an attempt to salvage a draw but on 83minutes they suffered a fatal blow when McNulty brought down Fearns in the box after a mistake by Dittmer.

The former Southport striker stepped up to confidently to bury the spot-kick beyond Dittmer and secure all three points.
