HONOURS were even at Rivacre Park on Saturday as the entertainment faded with the light and a lively first-half encounter degenerated into a scrap after the break.

However, after being on the back foot for most of the opening period, the Motormen still created several good chances to win the match in the second half.

Manager Owen Brown said: 'I was quite disappointed with the first-half display, but after the break the lads came out a bit more composed and had enough opportunities to get all three points. We need a response after Tuesday and at least we've been able to start another run.'

Vauxhall took the lead on 10 minutes, just as they had done at Altrincham four days earlier, but on this occasion the goal was down to their own slick passing rather than an opponent's mistake.

Darren Wright cut inside from the right hand side of the penalty area and neatly found Peter Cumiskey, who slotted home with a smart first-time effort.

The strike seemed to shake up the visitors from Worcestershire and they started to pepper the Vauxhall goal.

A looping header from Arthur Appleton dropped on to the roof of the net and the same player found Chris Gray, whose curling effort was well-saved by Tim Dittmer.

Dittmer again had to be at his best to tip another Appleton header over the bar. But Red-ditch equalised from the resulting Simon Hollis corner from the right as Scott Rickards was on hand to fire in from close range, after Sean Flynn's header had rattled the crossbar.

A dull second half was brought into life on 72 minutes when Redditch's goalscorer Rickards was dismissed following an off-the-ball incident with Carl Spellman, who was also booked.

Vauxhall pushed forward to try at take advantage of their numerical supremacy but substitute Karl O'Donnell missed their two best opportunities, striking the post and shooting wide after rounding keeper Paul Maynard.

Vauxhall: Dittmer, Woodyatt, McDermott, Porter (O'Donnell 60), Spellman, Brazier, Nesbitt, Lawton (Griffiths 74), D Wright, Olsen, Cumiskey (A Wright 83). Chris O'Brien has left the Motormen to join Colwyn Bay.
