CHESTER chairman Stephen Vaughan last night rebuffed an approach from Bristol Rovers for manager Keith Curle.

Vaughan angrily refused the overtures from his opposite number at the West Country club, where the managerial position is vacant.

He said: "I am extremely disappointed that a club at our level has the arrogance to think that they can just breeze in and try to spirit away our manager.

"If it had been a big club, like Leeds United or Southampton who came in, then we wouldn't stand in Keith's way, but I consider it an insult that a club beneath us in our division try to destabi-lise our success with this type of approach."

The City chairman continued: "Keith Curle is one of the brightest young managers in the Football League, and we know that we have a man who can take us to the next level, promotion is our main priority this season, we have certainly profited from Mansfield Town's loss.

"Keith is under contract to Chester City and I will be sitting down with him in the near future to discuss extending our partner-ship."

Curle started his playing career with Bristol Rovers, making his senior debut in 1981, his initial foray into management started with Mansfield Town, before he parted company with the Field Mill club following a disputed fall-out with chairman Keith Haslam.

Ironically the managerial vacancy at Bristol Rovers was created when former Chester manager Ian Atkins was dismissed a month ago, immediately following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of City at the Deva Stadium.

Chester are next in action on Saturday when they host Bury.
