UPTON AA have got their 2008/09 season off to a flyer – winning both their opening Division One matches.

Athletic came from behind on Wednesday night to beat city rivals Blacon YC 2-1 and ran out 3-2 winners away to Maghull last Saturday.

Striker Danny Andrews netted a hat-trick at the weekend and scored the winner midweek to ensure Upton’s 100% start to the new campaign.

Joint-manager Dave Wright believes there’s plenty more to come from his new-look side.

“I don’t think we’ve played to our potential as we’ve had a lot of players missing, but I’m very pleased with how the season’s started,” he said.

In spite of defeat, Blacon boss Pete Hughes was encouraged by the team’s performance.

He said: “We played some really good football and were the better side, certainly in the first half.

“There are a lot of positives to take from the game and we nearly got the point we deserved in the last minute when Michael Mackin hit the bar.”

Christleton suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to West Kirby on Wednesday night.

The result comes as a surprise after Friday’s excellent 2-1 away win against Castrol Social.

Paul Hughes will return as manager this weekend and takes his side to Newton tonight (6.30pm).

In Division Two, Helsby drew 3-3 at home to Mallaby on Monday while Chester Nomads comfortably beat Heswall reserves away 3-0 the same night.

Last Friday, second-half strikes from Nick Askey and Kevin Patterson ensured Helsby beat Chester Nomads 2-0.

In Division Three, Upton AA Reserves followed in the footsteps of the seniors with two wins in two matches.

Athletic’s second-string beat Pensby at home on Monday and a hat-trick from Luke Jackson ensured a 3-0 victory over Mersey Royal last Friday.

Blacon YC Reserves suffered two defeats on the bounce, 5-2 away to Ashville Reserves on Monday and 3-2 at home to Southport Trinity reserves last Saturday.

St Werburgh’s lost 3-0 to Manor Athletic last Friday but bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Christleton Reserves in midweek.

Christleton’s second string thrashed Ellesmere Port Reserves 5-0 last Saturday with Alan Crawford netting a hat-trick.
