UEFA have described media reports that they rejected an appeal for a minute’s silence to be held ahead of last night’s Euro 2012 semi-final in memory of Spanish footballer Miki Roque as “unfounded”.

European football’s governing body insist they did not receive any request from the Spanish football federation for a tribute to be held for Roque ahead of the Spain v Portugal match in Donetsk.

Former Real Betis and Liverpool defender Roque died on Sunday at the age of 23 following a fight against cancer.

A UEFA statement read: “Further to media reports mentioning the alleged refusal of UEFA to allow a minute of silence in memory of Miki Roque, UEFA would like to underline that it has never received any such request from the Spanish FA and that articles reporting its rejection are therefore totally unfounded.”
