GREAT Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) has announced the squad for the European Championships to be held in Nottwil, Switzerland from October 2-9.

GB won the European Championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Currently ranked sixth in the world, they will begin the tournament with pool games against Poland, Germany, Switzerland, France and Ireland.

The squad is as follows: Aaron Phipps (Southampton), Mandip Sehmi (Leamington Spa, Warwicks), Steve Brown, captain (Sittingbourne), David Anthony (Swansea, Wales), Ross Morrison (Fareham, Hants), Andrew Barrow (New Eltham, London), Alan Ash (Wolverhampton), Mike Kerr (Glasgow), Bulbul Hussain (Bethnal Green, London), Myles Pearson (Lytham St. Anne’s), Jonathan Coggan (Chelmsford, Essex), Kylie Grimes (Farnham, Surrey).

Chief executive David Pond said: “The team put in some excellent performances against strong opposition in the GB Cup recently.

“Their win against Japan, currently ranked third in the world, was a clear sign that coach Tom O’Connor’s strategy and development of players is starting to pay dividends.

“Our sights are set on the gold medal in Switzerland but with Belgium, Sweden and France all looking strong we will have to perform at our best and I am looking forward to some exciting games.”
