PAUL Baker has been given the backing of the Chester City Supporters’ Trust in his bid to buy Stephen Vaughan’s majority shareholding in the club.

As revealed in The Chronicle on Friday, Baker has “lodged an interest” with Vaughan, who resigned as chairman and director last week.

Lifelong Chester fan Baker – whose firm UK Sameday sponsors the Blues – has met Trust officials to outline his plans for the future of the club.

A Trust statement read: “We believe that, subject to Stephen Vaughan selling his share, Baker represents the best hope for the club due to his passion and vision.”

Baker faces competition from two other groups – overseas management company ISM and Liverpool-based sports marketing agency Sport-6.

Trust chairman Paul Reid added: “We’re aware of other parties with an interest, but it is Paul Baker who has shared his vision with us as a fans’ group, we believe that he has the best interests of the club at heart.”
