VAUXHALL Motors Reserves returned to haunt reigning Carls-berg West Cheshire League Division One champions Heswall with a 4-0 win in the Bill Weight Memorial Trophy semi-final last Tuesday.
Paul Addo and Neill McCann each bagged a brace as the Motormen evoked memories of last season's victory over their neighbours in the Wirral FA Senior Cup final.
Newly promoted Division Two champions New Brighton and Mond Rangers clashed in the other semi-final, with Mond going through on penalties.
However, the Motormen Reserves were unable to recapture their cup form on Saturday when their Division One campaign began with a disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to Cammell Laird Reserves.
On Friday evening, Heswall began the defence of their Division One title on a winning note, by defeating Castrol Social 1-0.
Saturday's 0-0 stalemate between Newton and Poulton Vics was preceded by a presentation made by the League President Ken Halsall to George Leicester, in recognition of achieving a milestone of officiating at 500 West Cheshire League matches.
Ellesmere Port's League campaign began on a losing note against Merseyside Police, with Mark Ellison plundering the game's only goal as the visitors snatched all three points.
In Division Two, Capenhurst Villa, who finished third in last season's title race, got off to a flier, as goals from James Fletcher (2) and Alan Locke secured a 3-0 home victory against Chester Nomads.
Willaston had to settle for a share of the spoils after drawing 2-2 with Maghull Reserves. James Clare and Mark Baldwin struck for Willaston with Tony Langley and Dave Hughes replying for the visitors.
A local derby between Grange Athletic and Ellesmere Port Reserves caught the spotlight in Division Three, with Port claiming a comfortable 4-0 victory, thanks to doubles from Chris Hayes and Mark Roberts.
It was also a time of celebration for Capenhurst Villa Reserves who defeated MBNA 2-0 courtesy of Dolan Tolan and Lee Hammond.
