I’D absolutely love to see Theo Walcott in a Liverpool shirt. He’d be a great addition to a squad that desperately needs quality reinforcements. And a perfect fit for a number of reasons.
Firstly, he is still young at 23 and his best days are ahead of him. But he also has bags of top level experience, including at international level.
You would also be buying at least two players in one. He can play up front, as a winger or a wide midfield player, so he’d give us real options too.
He is a bright lad and an intelligent footballer – we saw that with his goals against Reading in midweek. And he also has lightning pace.
I can definitely see him fitting the template for a Brendan Rodgers player – he’s just the sort of footballer I think the boss likes. Add in the fact that Walcott (inset) was a boyhood Liverpool fan, well I can tell you what an amazing feeling it is to play for the club you supported as a lad and they don’t come any bigger than Liverpool FC.
The hugely disappointing result against Swansea in midweek showed up our lack of squad depth. I think we committed suicide by dropping so many senior stars because there were one or two players out there who weren’t up to the job. Joe Cole’s days must be numbered. He knows his face doesn’t fit but you can’t blame him for taking the £95,000 a week he’s entitled to. It just hasn’t worked out for us or him – and it is never going to now.
Young Samed Yesil up front has ability but he needs more time to develop and didn’t look ready on Wednesday.
So we need top quality additions in January and then again next summer to bolster a team that has got some top lads in it – like Gerrard, Suarez, Skrtel, Agger, Reina and Johnson, plus such promising youngsters like Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling.
Theo Walcott would be the ideal signature for me – and signal to the rest that we remain as ambitious and determined as ever to get back to the top table at home and abroad.
