I COMPLETELY understand why Brendan Rodgers felt the need to contact referees’ chief Mike Riley this week to complain about all the decisions which have gone against Liverpool so far this season.

You expect one or two bad ones because officials are bound to make mistakes but last weekend’s defeat to Manchester United was just ridiculous.

Jonjo Shelvey should never have been sent off for that challenge on Jonny Evans.

If that’s a red card then I would have been given my marching orders in the first five minutes of every game during my playing career.

Evans went in just as hard for United and the two players collided in trying to win a 50/50.

It’s a contact sport and there was no need to dish out any cards.

I think the referee was trying to show everyone who was in charge.

What I didn’t like was Shelvey’s reaction as he went off the field.

I understand that he was upset but to start shouting at Alex Ferguson like that was stupid.

There were also two big penalty calls which went against us.

Luis Suarez had one turned down and then at the other end United were awarded a very soft one.

It was never a penalty when Antonio Valencia went down. I don’t think Glen Johnson even touched him.

It was very frustrating because that was a game we should never have lost. We dominated the first half and then took the lead with 10 men early in the second half. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold on.

All you want is referees to be fair and treat both teams equally.

The table doesn’t look great but we’ve been playing some decent football and I’m confident we’ll get that first league win at Norwich City today.

Suarez got a brilliant hat-trick there last season and hopefully he will repeat the trick this afternoon.

I just hope we’re all talking about an entertaining game rather than more controversy involving referees.
