Vauxhall Motors 4, Skelmersdale United 3: VAUXHALL booked their place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup after edging a seven-goal thriller at Rivacre Park, writes Paul Hassall.

The Motormen proved too strong for their North West Counties league opponents Skelmersdale United and will now travel to fellow Conference North side Hednesford Town on Saturday, October 22.

Manager Owen Brown said: 'We made hard work of the victory, but it's a good win and we are just happy to be in the next round of the cup.

'We've now got to try and take that form into the two away games, at Harrogate Town and Stafford Rangers, before the next round of the cup. We want to do well on all fronts.'

In rain-swept conditions the visitors shaded the early exchanges, with Rudd and Mulvaney both wasting opportunities.

And they were made to pay on 26 minutes when Cumiskey chased a high clearance into the right hand side of the Skelmersdale box and held off three challenges before firing the ball beyond the advancing keeper.

The Motormen dominated the remainder of the first half and were unlucky not to double their lead as McGivern crashed a superb 30 yard free-kick off the crossbar, before Cumiskey ran clear, only to drag his right foot shot wide of the goal.

The second half began at a frantic pace and within seconds of the restart the visitors were level.

A long ball from Douglas was misjudged by Duffy, allowing Rudd to steal in and drill a stunning equaliser into the far corner.

Vauxhall regained the lead just two minutes later as Cumiskey claimed his second of the game from the spot after he was brought down in the area by Hallam.

The visitors were rewarded for their efforts on 57 minutes as Rudd plundered his second of the match, after some wonderful wing play from Osman enabled Douglas to play him through.

Cumiskey completed a superb all-round display with his hat-trick on 67 minutes.

A weak back pass by Price allowed McDermott to challenge the goalkeeper before slipping the ball to Cumiskey to pass the ball into an empty net.

The striker claimed his fourth of the match on 76 minutes, with an exquisite chip from the edge of the area.

With time running out the visitors kept fighting and Rudd completed his hat-trick on 84 minutes with a fine near post finish from Cole's right wing cross.

Vauxhall: Dittmer, Duffy, McDermott, Willis, McNulty, Parra Dioni, Garrity (Moogan 66), Lawton, Rooney, McGivern, Cumiskey (Addo 89).
