A DREAM start against high-flying Hucknall Town with a wonder goal after just two minutes was not enough for Vauxhall, as defensive errors led to a 3-1 home defeat on Saturday.

Their goal came when Wayne Mc-Dermott drove a searching ball upfield for Terry Fearns to lay off for Paul Robertson, who picked out Peter Cumiskey at the back post and the onrushing striker hammered past Adam Sollitt with a smart first-time effort.

Hucknall equalised 17 minutes later as the home defence failed to deal with Dean Barrick's long ball over the top, and Danny Bacon lobbed the ball over Mike Kinsella's head to score from Gary Ricketts's knock-down.

Fearns went close to restoring the home side's advantage, but his powerful header was tipped over the bar from a left-wing cross from substitute Carl Macauley, who had replaced the injured Robertson, but it was the visitors who went into the break ahead.

Kinsella did well to block Ricketts's initial header from Jon McCarthy's right-wing centre, but the lanky striker found his luck was in as he stuck out a leg and the ball rebounded off his heel and into the net on the half-hour mark.

The game was finished as a contest just four minutes after the restart as more defensive chaos from the Motormen resulted in Craig Robinson slicing an attempted clearance high in the air, only for the ball to drop to the feet of Danny Mayman, who slotted home from close range.

There was no way back for Vauxhall, despite Robbie Lawton firing a dipping effort on to the roof of the net and Sollitt punching clear an in-swinging free kick from Cumiskey.

Manager Owen Brown said: 'I stick up for the lads when they do well, but we made too many basic mistakes.

'We scored a fantastic goal, better than any one you'd see in the Premiership, but from then on we put things on a plate for Hucknall. They didn't even have to come and outplay us.'
