PUBS, clubs and businesses in Middlewich are being encouraged to get teams together for this year's Bricker Cup. The charity tournament was revived in 2003 and organisers were so pleased with the result they are hoping for an even better show this time around.

Each team needs just a limited number of 'signed' players - those registered under FA rules - with the squads of 15 players (including a substitute goalkeeper) expected to play 90-minute, 11-a-side matches.

Eleven teams contested the 2003 cup, which was finally lifted by Giorgios chip shop, where it sits on display.

This year's challenge kicks off with the group stages from the start of April, with matches continuing until the big final at Middlewich Town's Seddon Street ground on Sunday, May 30.

A spokesman for the tournament told the Chronicle: 'The revived tournament was a big success last year and we were pleased with the number of teams that came forward to take part.

'It was played in good spirits, too, with very few yellow cards and only one red.

'We have hired enough pitches so that we can have as many as 20 teams taking part this year.'

Cash raised by the event goes to charity - in 2003 Leighton Hospital received £500. Registration forms are available from Jonathan Williams on 01606 833434.
