SPECULATION continued last night that Chester midfielder Roberto Martinez was the front runner for the managerial position with Coca-Cola League One club, Swansea City.

The vacancy arose following last week’s resignation of Kenny Jackett with other names being linked including former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders and the ex-Leeds manager, Kevin Blackwell.

City chairman, Stephen Vaughan, said: “We know of Swansea’s interest but Roberto has 18 months on his contract and if he were to move we would look for compensation.”

Swansea chairman, Huw Jenkins said: “We have interest from both Roberto Martinez and Dean Saunders. But, is this a two horse race? Well let’s just say you don’t see many two horse races, they are in the running but so are a lot of people.”

Martinez said: “Swansea is a fantastic football club, it is in my heart and the problem is they are in a division where they don’t belong.”

Meanwhile, it has been announced that the former Leeds United, Wrexham, and Chester City striker, Don Weston, has died.

He scored 97 goals in 255 Football League appearances and was 70-years-old.

Chester’s youngsters lost their FA Youth Alliance, Tranmere Rovers defeated City 3-0 at Raby Vale.
