SUNDOWNER went out in a blaze of glory in The Courier Post Runcorn Sunday League.

They brought a memorable climax to the league season and indeed their membership of the competition with a shock victory in the coveted Bob Orme Challenge Cup final.

The Widnesians denied Premier Division champions Bridge a piece of history - the Runcorn side had been looking to become the first team to win this particular trophy for three consecutive seasons.

Bridge made the breakthrough, however, after 15 minutes.

Karl Thomas broke the offside trap and saw his strong shot deflect in off Paul Carson.

Sundowner, however, were determined not to let the favourites out of their sights.

On 25 minutes, George Donnachie equalised with a downward header from close range.

Bridge continued to press but Sundowner keeper Russ Keeble clung on to every cross and shot.

The second half brought more excitement as football and passing flowed freely.

Ten minutes in, Sundowner took the lead for the first time.

Captain Ste Savage's free kick was turned in by Andy Gott for an own goal.

But Gott immediately made amends - scoring at the other end within a minute for 2-2.

Bridge Timber's mammoth season seemed to be taking its toll and Sundowner regained the advantage in the 70th minute.

Great work from Mark Radley saw him beat two defenders in the area before laying off a pinpoint pass to George Donnachie who fired home spectacularly from 18 yards.

Savage broke clear for Sundowner and clinically finished to give his team an unassailable 4-2 lead.

Mrs Orme presented the trophies in memory of her husband, Bob, a popular and long-serving local referee.

League press officer Mark Buckley said: 'It has been a great season played in great spirit, and hopefully a further stepping stone to strengthening local Sunday football.'

Applications are now being taken for next year's league competition.

They held Magpies 1-1 with Louis Greenway scoring for Kestrels and Michael Heston for Magpies.

They then beat Vultures 5-1 with goals by William Fraser (2) and Josh Rosenberg (3).

With the Cup Competitions coming up, Kestrels have come to life at a good time.

Crows, meanwhile, clinched the league title with a 3-1 win against second-placed Falcons with John Leonard and Jack McKeown scoring for the champions and D Hill replying. Crows also beat Vultures 2-0 - John Leonard and Ben Hines on target - while Falcons drew 0-0 with Magpies.

Group Two's United won both their games - 5-0 against Borough, thanks to Ryan Ince (2) and Sam Mottram (3) and 4-0 versus Rovers. This time Ryan Ince (2), Oliver Ashall and Jason Flett were on the mark.

These results mean United have won the League for the second time.

But as in Group One, the team of the week has to be the bottom team.

Basement battlers City won both their matches - 2-0 versus Rovers courtesy of Robbie Holman's strike and a brilliant headed goal by Jack Hayes.

City also beat depleted Saints 2-1, Holman and Jack Ryan notching for City and Phil Edwards replying.
