MANCHESTER Metropolitan University Academy take on Barnsley College in the final of British Colleges Cup today.
The team, based at the Alsager Campus at Hassall Road, edged holders Southgate College on penalties in the semi finals on Friday to earn their spot.
It is a super achievement in their first year in the competition. Coach Melvyn Wilkes said: 'It was horrible going to penalties, but I'm proud of the lads and delighted.'
Preparations for the semi final in North London did not go to plan, and MMU had just five minutes to warm up before kick-off.
But it did not phase them and they harshly had two goals ruled out for offside early on. The diminutive Jamie Bown broke the deadlock on the hour with a header, but Southgate soon levelled, also with a header.
Extra-time could not separate the sides, and Tim Sanders, Ben Cunliffe, Andy Cain, Robert Kent and Josh Smith all dispatched the first five penalties, as did their opponents.
In sudden death, keeper Danny Roberts pulled off an excellent save, before Chris Leigh kept his nerve to notch the decisive spot kick. The final is at Telford United's New Bucks Head Stadium at 3pm.
