ELLESMERE Port's disappointing form in Division One was interrupted on Saturday with an impressive 5-0 victory over Newton in the first round of the Wirral FA Senior Cup.

A Gary Southern double and strikes from Richie White, Neil Shepherd and Andy Walker saw them through.

Castrol Social are also in the hat for the second round after ending West Kirby's winning sequence.

Jamie Halligan and Paul Smith found the net in a 2-1 success with Phil Hudson hitting Kirby's consolation.

Vauxhall Reserves completed a hat-trick for our clubs as a brace from James Thomas ensured New Brighton were beaten 2-0.

On the League scene, Division Two promotion candidates Capenhurst Villa moved to within six points of current leaders Mond Rangers with a 3-1 win over Manor Athletic.

Villa, who netted through Jordan Brierley, Mark Ryan and Chris Sharp, are also three points clear of third-placed Maghull Reserves with two games in hand.

Willaston's chances of an immediate return to Division Two, were enhanced after Richard Foulkes, James Clare and Karl Dunbar bagged the goals which secured a 3-1 win over third-placed Mond Rangers Reserves in Division Three.

Five points is now the difference separating fifth-placed Willaston from current leaders New Brighton, but they also have a game in hand on the top-of-the-table side.

Goals from Chris McNeill and Duncan Tolan were insufficient for Capenhurst Villa Reserves as they crashed 5-2 at Blacon Youth Reserves.
