SAMI HYYPIA will make an emotional return to Anfield this summer after Liverpool confirmed a pre-season friendly with Bayer Leverkusen.
The German giants visit Merseyside on Sunday, August 12 (3pm kick-off) for what will be the Reds' final warm-up game before the start of the Premier League campaign.
Liverpool have already confirmed friendly encounters against Toronto FC (July 21), Roma (July 25) and Tottenham Hotspur (July 28) on their tour to North America.
Manager Brendan Rodgers will then oversee his first competitive games in charge with Europa League third qualifying round fixtures on August 2 and 9 before Leverkusen travel to L4.
Hyypia spent 10 years on Merseyside before departing for Leverkusen, first as a player and then as a coach.
The Finland international was appointed caretaker manager in April before being given a contract until 2015 this summer.
Scouted by Liverpool great Ron Yeats, Hyypia went on to become one of the Reds' greatest-ever signings, making 464 appearances after arriving in 1999.
He went on to captain the club, score 35 goals and help re-establish Liverpool as a European force.
Hyypia’s list of honours at Liverpool include the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two FA Cups and two League Cups.
Hyypia revealed his delight at the fixture on social network website Twitter, writing: “Very happy to be managing Bayer Leverkusen against my former club Liverpool on August 12”.
