CHESTER'S Ryan Lowe turned in a man of the match performance, scored City's goal but then ruined things by aiming a verbal volley at a linesman which earned him a last-minute dismissal in this Division Two encounter.
The former Shrewsbury Town striker registered Chester's 56th minute opener, when he side-footed home from close range after Artell had knocked on a Ben Davies cross.
However, with a minute of normal time remaining Lowe appeared to be fouled, not for the first time, by Hawkins. In ill-advised but understandable frustration, the 26-year-old reacted.
Besides a suspension, City manager Keith Curle confirmed: "We have a code of conduct this season and Ryan will receive a club fine for his dismissal."
The first half was a fairly sterile affair, with City's best chance coming from Scott McNiven whose delightful 18- yard chip went agonisingly over the bar.
Rushden should have taken the lead a minute from the break, but Chillingworth made a hash of a close-range header.
Lowe's goal 11 minutes into the second period was no more than City had deserved, after Richardson and Branch had gone narrowly wide for the visitors.
However the lead was short-lived. Five minutes later Max Griggs levelled after some sloppy defending by Chester.
A throw-in was knocked on by Bell to the substitute Chris O'Grady who had only been on the pitch for three minutes. The striker, who is on loan from Leicester City, found space and drilled past Mackenzie. Towards the end of the match Chester had chances to earn the victory their overall play deserved.
Curle said: "It is a nice feeling when you come away from home and reckon you could have won the match.
"We have had two difficult away games and the fact we are unbeaten is giving this football club a foundation to build on after the upheaval it has suffered in the past."
City tomorrowtravel to Molineux to face Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first round of the Carling Cup.
