A 30-YARD Craig Ruane strike was to no avail as Widnes Bayer Res went down 4-1 at Lane Ends in the Ryland Cup first round.

Moore United Res also crashed out, despite a brace from Paul Bennion, in a 4-2 defeat to Grappenhall Sports.

Moorfield 3rd were unlucky to bow out 3-2 despite goals from McGlynn and Marsden at Fife Rangers whose winner came from Carl Jackson in the last minute of extra time.

In the Jubilee Trophy, Moorfield's first team succumbed 6-1 to classy Rainhill Town. Grindley (2), Morris, Gannon, Pearson and Hughes were on target for Rainhill with Elliot Eyo finding the consolation.

Halton Borough went out 3-2 on penalties to Greenall SO after a 3-3 draw in 120 minutes.

Despite Mike Colebrook lobbing them in front after 20 minutes, Boro trailed 2-1 after an hour.

But Gary Jones levelled with a splendid solo strike for which he had beaten three defenders on the edge of the Greenall penalty box.

Extra-time saw Greenall score from a penalty but Paul Withers rescued Boro at the death.

On the league scene, Ged Byrne's header gave Waterloo Wanderers a share of the Division Five spoils at Haydock, who equalised in the last minute.

Moorfield's second string won 4-2 at Spartak with veteran Andy O'Neill and the evergreen Dave Handley rolling back the years in midfield as they dominated for long periods. Strikes from Danny Williamson and Ben Price plus two own goals sent Paul Calf's side 4-0 up. The hosts were flattered by their two late scores.

Division Three's Widnes Bayer had Graham Long and 16-year-old Nat Braddish to thank for a 3-2 victory over St Michael's Res.

In the Frontrunner Premier Division, Ben Jones scored the only goal to hand Moore United the points at Downall Green.
