CARL Macauley is relishing the prospect of Friday's pre-season clash with neighbours Tranmere Rovers.

The Motors boss reckons it is the perfect start to his side's pre-season schedule and is looking forward to pitting his wits against new Rovers boss Ronnie Moore.

Macauley said: 'It's a nice game to start with and we are all looking forward to it.

'Ronnie Moore will want to look at the new players he has brought in and although it is just about match fitness at this time of year, it is a good test for us and we wont want to come off the field having been hammered by five or six.'

The match has become a regular pre-season attraction for Motors with a crowd nearing the 1000 mark expected to attend Rivacre Park.

Macauley is set to give new signings Stuart Whittaker, Lee Dames and Mark Williams their first run out in Vauxhall colours and he will also run the rule over a number of trialists during the match.

However striker Thomas Rooney, faces a race against time to be fit to face his former club, after suffering a groin strain in training.

Macauley said: 'It's a shame for Thomas because players like to take on their former clubs and they like to prove a point.

'He's desperate to make it but we are more concerned with getting him ready for the season and won't risk him if he is not completely fit.' nThe match will kick off at 7pm on Friday and admission is £6 for adults and £3 for all concessions.

Fans are advised to arrive early to avoid congestion.
