FOOTBALL played second fiddle to the weather at the weekend, as no less than 11 West Cheshire League fixtures were postponed.

In addition, the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup third round replays involving Port sides Castrol Social and Ellesmere Port also succumbed to the elements.

Port's clash with Mid-Cheshire League Styal and Castrol Social's engagement with last season's beaten finalists, Christleton, have now both been re-scheduled for this Saturday.

Local interest in the Wirral FA Amateur Cup third round came in the form of Grange Athletic but while they were fortunate with the conditions, they weren't with the result as visitors Maghull Reserves beat them 4-1 to go into the semi-finals, goals coming from Dave Purvis (2), Tommy Ainsworth and Paul Harriett.

In West Cheshire Division One, Vaux-hall Motors Reserves came out on top in their tussle with Merseyside Police.

A smart double from Anthony Carroll was supplemented by an effort from Paul O'Hare as the Motormen savoured a 3-0 victory and moved six points clear of third-from-bottom, Newton.

Capenhurst Villa's match with New Brighton Reserves in Division Two was postponed, enabling Heswall Reserves to consolidate their position at the top as they beat Manweb 6-2.

A goal from first team regular Tommy Rowlands helped Christleton Reserves to a 1-1 stalemate with promotion-chasing Runcorn Town, who replied via Gary Lunt.

Saturday's Division Three action saw Capenhurst Villa Reserves score through Lee Hammond but they still conceded all three points at Shaftes-bury after goals from Scott Houghton and Danny Graham made it 2-1 to the Birkenhead boys.

Capenhurst's first team will be hoping to pull back some points in the race for the Division Two title this weekend when they travel to erratic Halton.

Neighbours Willaston have a relegation battle on their hands with their visit to FC Pensby.

In Division Three, Ellesmere Port Reserves need to take at least a point from their trip to leaders Bebington Athletic if they are to keep pace with the leading group while Cape's second string entertain Upton AA Reserves.

Grange Athletic are aiming to profit at the expense of St Werburgh's and Willaston Reserves are confident of at least a point against Blacon YC Reserves.
