WINSFORD United have set the record straight - on and off the pitch.

After the season's opening four-goal mauling by Oldham at home, United have scored two impressive away victories - and manager Dave Twite wants it known his players are receiving no wages or expenses.

'Not a single penny,' said Twite. 'They are playing for the name Winsford United and for me, and I think our supporters ought to know that.

'They are totally committed to the club and have been since the first day they attended training.

'I know, because some comments have got back to me, that fans believed they were getting certain amounts and criticised them for that one performance on those grounds. But they are getting nothing.'

Blues recovered from defeat to win at much-fancied Eccleshall and then promotion favourites Maine Road.

And they put that change in form to the test tonight at home to Norton United (7.45pm), before two knockouts - at Tadcaster in the FA Cup preliminary round on

Saturday and, subject to a replay, at Congleton Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Twite added: 'Only three games have gone and I said after the Oldham match that I have loads of faith in the players. That defeat did nothing to change that, but the next two results bore out their ability.

'I think some of them froze in the first home game and they found it more relaxed with less pressure away. But it is crucial we win our home games and get the supporters behind us.

'I want the fans to help and give us their full support because the team cannot show more commitment.

'I told them from day one there would be no money. The club is on its knees.

'But I have also told them that if they get points on the board, then I will go back to the chairman (Mark Loveless) and ask him for rewards. If we are in a leading position by Christmas then I would ask Mark to back our promotion push.

'I have told the players great things can happen at Winsford United if they are successful.'

Blues have doubts over Neil Harrison (bruised foot) and Stuart Wellstead (hip) for tonight's game against Norton, whose one victory so far was against Oldham.

Mark Quinn, the former Liverpool youth teamer, was missing on the opening day and he returned to inspire the two wins. He ties the team together from central mid-field and has impressed United officials so much, they broached the possibility of a contract for him with Twite.

But the United boss would not make an exception and does see the need to protect the 26-year-old Warrington-based player. He was recruited by full-back Roy Sweeney, who has yet to make his first appearance because of injury.

'Mark is an important player for us and his return certainly gave us a lift.

'But he is going nowhere this season. He has given me his word and that is good enough for me. Hopefully, he will win promotion and then we'll see.

'It is too early to even gauge how good we are or might be, though I know what they can do. They have already shown that - the key is repeating it consistently over nine long months.'

Twite has signed former Middlewich and Knutsford full-back Steve Moss as cover and another signing may be in the offing.
