CREWE retained the Roger Haydock Trophy after beating Whitchurch Alport 3-0 on Sunday.

Three second-half goals were enough to clinch the silverware with former Al-port man Dave Hanson scoring twice and striker Mike Hilditch the other.

Crewe had started their pre-season programme with a 4-1 win over Knypersley last week.

Delighted manager Ian O'Reilly said: `Our extra fitness has told in both games and retaining the trophy will give us an extra boost. This pre-season we have done a lot of fitness work, and it is good to see the older players looking sharp.

`The youth team players who have come into the squad have also done very well. Young Callum Jones played the whole game against Knypersley and gave a very competent performance in goal, and midfielder Martin Jones has played in both games and not looked out of place.'

Crewe had hoped to play Cammell Lairds on Saturday but their opponents cancelled at late notice.

O'Reilly's side host Winsford at the Cumberland Arena tonight (6.30pm) and visit New Brighton on Saturday and Shawbury on Tuesday.

Crewe FC would like to hear from girls aged 16 who are interested in forming a team. Further details are available from Margaret Vickers on 01270 581578.
