CREWE FC chairman Pat Slack says manager Ian O'Reilly's job is safe.

Dedicated O'Reilly had been concerned that his position may be discussed at an executive board meeting tonight after the club was relegated from Division One of the Mid-Cheshire League.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Garswood United means Crewe finish rock-bottom with just six wins out of 30 games. But Slack said the matter is not even on the agenda.

He said: 'Crewe FC will not be discussing the position of first-team manager Ian O'Reilly as there is nothing to discuss. We work as a team and all the management and coaching staff throughout the club have a part to play in the successes or failures.

'Ian is, and will continue to be, our first-team manager. Like all our management and coaches, he puts in long hours, but then that is what happens at grassroots football.

'It is a measure of how hard they all work and they have all been awarded the FA Certificate for Services to Football for the third time in six years.'

However, the chairman does want to make sure that players are not torn between Crewe FC and their Sunday teams next season to ensure the maximum chance of them bouncing straight back.

He explained: 'No-one gets paid but we do expect commitment. The players at the majority of lower league clubs play both on Saturday and Sunday and I can see that our players, rather unfortunately, are stuck between two clubs competing for their time and loyalty.

'Next season I have asked Ian to select a squad of 20 players who will be the focus of all we do to come back up as champions. That is our target.'

Meanwhile, Crewe FC Reserves boss Paul Lowe will meet club officials to decide whether to run a second-string team next season.

A difficult campaign, during which they have had to field less than 11 players on more than one occasion, came to an end with a 2-0 home defeat to Penketh and Sankey.

It means the side has finished bottom of the Mid-Cheshire League Reserves Division, with just three wins in 26 attempts. Lowe said: 'This was a very poor performance by an under-strength side that lacked both effort and commitment. Only Carl Greatbanks could hold his head up, after yet another outstanding performance.'

Crewe FC U14s have won their league title while the U13s captured the Wilf Saunders Cup. The club's Blue Blazer Squad defeated Stockport County, Witton Albion and Crewe Alex in a seven-a-side competition at the Gresty Road club's Shavington training complex.
