Should the lack of new faces to arrive at Chester FC so far be a concern to supporters?

Wrexham have been extremely active since the appointment of Gary Mills with six new signings in the bag already.

Lincoln City can match that, Tranmere Rovers are close behind on five, FC Halifax Town and Southport are among those to have brought in four.

Whether or not that's a reason to be troubled depends on whether you believe getting your business done early is a positive or negative.

It's understandable some fans will be growing restless, particularly when divisional rivals are making what appear to be strong additions.

Chester have come close on a couple of occasions but targets have slipped through the club's grasp primarily for financial reasons, underlining the spending gulf in the league.

But there are three important factors to take into consideration before becoming too agitated.

First up, at this stage 12 months ago just one signing had been completed, that being Sean McConville.

Of course, it was unclear at that time which division the club would be and what budget Steve Burr would be working to, but even so the influx that followed illustrated that a slow start to recruitment need not be a problem.

The second point is the need to remember manager actually has most of his squad in place already.

Last year he went into the summer with just three contracted players: Danny Harrison, John Danby and John Rooney.

Now he has 10 tied down for next term and eight can probably be considered first choice: Jon Worsnop, Ben Heneghan, Michael Kay, Ryan Higgins, Craig Mahon, George Thomson, John Rooney, Sean McConville, Craig Hobson and Tom Peers.

There are suggestions the club will run with a slightly smaller squad than last season to stretch the budget a little further and supplement that with loan signings given the success of Brad Abbott, Matty Hughes, Oliver McBurnie and Rhys Oates.

Finally, the manager is not someone who believes rushing through deals as soon as the season is over to be the wisest approach.

He has said more than once that he thinks a little patience can reap rewards, particularly when operating to a tight budget.

Contract end dates differ from club to club with some not expiring until the end of June, so there will be another flood of players entering the marketplace then.

Burr will obviously want his squad close to finalised for the start of pre-season on July 6, but even then he will probably leave one or two places open to have a look at some trialists.

He'll no doubt be frustrated not to have a couple of signings done and dusted at this point, but the manager won't be panicking just yet and neither should the fans.
