DIVISION ONE leaders Newton forfeited their one hundred per cent record on Saturday, the honour going to Cammell Laird who took sweet revenge for an early season mauling at the hands of the Frankby outfit.

Ian Cooke bagged all three goals in Laird's 3-1 triumph, as Newton, still nine points clear at the top, slumped to their first League defeat since April.

Gary Reay was another hat-trick star who left his calling card, as second-placed Poulton Vics overcame Aintree Villa 3-1, Mark Campbell replying. At Gayton Park, Heswall emerged 2-0 victors from their tussle with Mallaby, courtesy of Andy Barker and a stunning 25-yarder from Kieran Fleetwood. Meanwhile Maghull returned to winning ways, Adam Maher and Gary Southern netting in the 2-1 eclipse of General Chemicals. Kevin Patterson scored for Chems.

Despite a smart double from Danny Mulla, Ellesmere Port were second best on the day against local rivals Vauxhall Reserves, the Motormen winning 6-2, with replies from Forde (2), Davies (2), Cox and Lally and a single Neil Clarke effort was enough for Castrol Social to edge Helsby. Ace marksman Chris Herbert was joined on the scoresheet by Wes Kilgannon, as 2002 champions Christleton celebrated a 3-0 win over Liverpool visitors Manweb.

Division Two leaders Merseyside Police entertained nearest rivals and reigning champions Poulton Vics Reserves, and this season's Bobbies showed that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with, after storming home 6-1, Leroy Foster (2), Mark Ellison (2), Glen Crowder and Chris Killen finding the net. Philly Greenhalgh plundered the game's only goal as Cammell Laird Reserves leapfrogged Vics into second place after winning at Blacon YC.

Mike Smethurst scored for Manor Athletic for the third game in succession, but his effort proved to no avail, as relegation rivals Heswall Reserves posted only their third League win of the season, Adam Barton (2), Kevin Coles and Carl Lamb obliging in the 4-1 victory. Two goals from Ashville Reserves' Ben Bennett also counted for nothing, as FC Pensby played their trump card in three-goal Karl Tatler. Further efforts from Gareth Owen (2) and Mark Irvine completed the 6-3 scoreline.

Kevin McDonald claimed both goals as Maghull's second string won 2-0 at New Brighton, while a hat-trick of penalties from Wayne Linnott anchored Mond Rangers to a 7-0 win at Willaston. The latter were consigned to the bottom of the table as a result.

Capenhurst Villa battled hard for a share of the spoils against Christleton Reserves and scored through Jordan Brierley, John Farrell and Steve Pinnington in the 3-3 stalemate.

Division Three leaders Manweb Reserves are now the only unbeaten side in the West Cheshire League and on Saturday the record was unaffected after Karl Montgomery, Tony Spellman and Gary Roderick applied the finishing touches in the 3-1 decision over New Brighton Reserves.

Kerr (2), Mitchell (2), Young and Powell scored the goals for second-placed Chester Nomads in their 6-0 rout of Upton AA Reserves and West Kirby Reserves won by the same margin at Grange Athletic, thanks to strikes from Mike McGree (2), Owen Davies (2), Kevin Upton and Matty Cass. Mersey Royal's fine 4-1 victory over Mond Rangers Reserves featured goals from Andy Bolton (2), Nick Scholes and Robbie Courtney, while a solo strike from Ian Crawford assured Shaftesbury of the points against Elles-mere Port Reserves.

Manor Athletic Reserves had Jamie Gillespie on target at MBNA, but the home side had the superior firepower and clinched a 3-1 win with goals from Keiran Smith (2) and Paul Hallows.

Two-goal Dominic Byrne was in top form for Capenhurst Villa Reserves, 3-0 winners at St Werburgh's.
