MOORFIELD have carved their name with pride on the Derek Roylance Challenge Cup.

A crowd of about 400 saw them beat Halton Borough 1-0 to become the first winners of the Widnes Cup in the modern era.

It was the first time for 28 years such a competition has taken place - it was reintroduced in memory of Avon Athletic FC stalwart Derek, a good friend of Sir Stanley Matthews.

Sponsored by Halton Borough Council, Widnes Recreation Club hosted the competition, involving eight amateur clubs from the town.

The final was a fitting climax with a close game being full of goalmouth action.

Moorfield's triumph also meant the Alan Corn Trophy for man-of-the-match stays within their ranks.

Striker Elliot Eyo received the award presented by the Moorfield Road club in tribute to a fine player and friend who died recently. The trophy was presented by Alan's pal Ian Prescott.

Halton Borough's disappointment at falling at the last was offset by the receipt of the Fair Play Trophy awarded by Widnes Referees' Society in honour of former colleagues Ted Tilley and Paul McKeown.

Mayor of Halton Ron Hignett was introduced to the finalists before kick off, and afterwards presented trophies supplied by Best Sports of Runcorn.

Council leader Tony McDermott also attended, joining sporting figures from the Halton and Warrington scene.

Councillor Phil Harris, executive board member for sport, said: 'The day was a great success and we look forward to similar events in the future.

"We are really happy Halton Borough Council could help with what was a great event for open-age football in Widnes and we now look forward to the formation of a Widnes Football Forum.'
